I paid a welder to make the repair. I will attempt using the rods again, but on a smaller bench-top repair. A 23′ pontoon is too much aluminum for a novice.

My brother bought a mapp gas torch and some welding rods that are supposed to be used with propane, to fill in a couple small holes in the body of his blazer. I thought mapp gas had a hotter flame than propane, yet he can't get these rods to melt with heat applied directly.

Apr 11, 2021 It comes with Rod and a separate flux and worked really well on some Thermo King condensers. It is so easy to solder and just use a hand held propane torch but find using mapp gas is quicker especially for larger pipes. Just google aluminum solder for HVAC and you will find one.

This time I went to the local Home Depot and bought some Mapp gas for my propane torch and tried it out on a pitts style large volume baffled muffler that I made for my DL-50.

Feb 09, 2010 You must also remember that TIG is welding this rod is a brazing rod that utilizes the "capillary" action of brazing to bond not the "fusion" action of TIG. I use both MAPP O/A for most repairs, although propane will work on very thin metal adequately. This rod is not crap, works well, will fix those "crap" broken diecast items nicely.

Just like Oxy-Fuel welding cutting, only MAPP gas or Propane is used instead of Acetylene since the flame temperature created by MAPP is enough in HVAC welding works. Theoretical Flame Temp.
