Jan 26, 2018 Feb 17, 2009. #2. Grain direction is primarily used to make sure the plates do not crack when locked into the lockups on your press..and in all cases grain direction is in relation to the grain of the actual aluminum of the plate, not the EC grain of the coating.
User Interaction Count: 17Aug 07, 2018 Applying this to metal bending, be it plate bending, press braking or any other type of metal forming, consideration must be given to the grain direction before any process is carried out. As a general rule, the grain line must run perpendicular to the bend to

Jan 02, 2014 A plate's grain direction comes from the mill's rolling process, which stretches the metallurgical structure and inclusions of the material. The grains run parallel to the rolling direction. Forming with the grain requires less bending force because the material's ductility is readily stretched.

Also see the figure below from Mil-Handbook 5. In the figure, the "L", "T", and "S" planes are marked clearly. Note that "T" and "L-T" indicate the same plane.

Jul 04, 2019 Grain direction is a term used to describe the rolling direction of metal after being manufactured into sheet, plate or coil. This manufacturing method is where hot metal is compressed through rollers and forced into shape, elongating the crystals in the process. Before processing, the crystals vary in both size and orientation, but then form ...

For grain size, larger grain produces a harder material, whereas smaller grain produces a more impact-resistant, tough material. For aluminum, we want to maintain that edge sharpness, so we want a small grain size for maximum edge retention. The other factor

Mar 19, 2018 Typically, when using an 8.5×11-inch sheet of paper, the grain is in the 11-inch, or the “grain long,” direction, meaning that the vast majority of fibers are aligned parallel to the 11-inch length of the paper. In contrast, if the sheet was cut “grain short,” then most of the fibers would be pointing across the short side of the sheet ...

Mar 06, 2019 Grain direction also plays into the amount of springback you can expect. To predict the material's behavior accurately during bending, especially at the press brake, you need to accommodate for the grain direction. Bending the sheet metal longitudinally (with the grain) allows those grains to separate at the grain boundaries.

4) The direction of the lines when bending. The bending direction should be perpendicular to the grain direction and cannot be parallel. The aluminum sheets parts that need to be brushed are best to be drawn after bending if the process allows, otherwise the probability of bending and breaking will increase.

Nov 09, 2013 Grain flow or direction in metal alloys is not a function of heat treatment but of mechanical deformation. What heat treating will do for you is change individual grain size and shape so you can go from columnar grains to equiaxed grains but the grains will still have a direction that is imparted by the mechanical deformation.

Aug 14, 2017 T he term “longitudinal” or “transverse” refers to whether the grain in the steel in the test piece runs the length of the rectangle (“longitudinal”) or across the width of the rectangle (“transverse”).. In an impact test, the test piece is shaped into a rectangle, with the “notch” being made in the middle of the length of the rectangle on one side.

Nov 25, 2016 No. 4 (Brushed, 150 Grit) A polished surface obtained by finishing with a 150 mesh abrasive. This is a general purpose bright finish with a visible directional “grain” which prevents mirror reflection. Commonly found in kitchen applications. We stock a variety of sizes and gauges in the #4 polished stainless steel sheet.
May 22, 2016 Texture or grain direction must be taken into account for accurate predictions of material behavior and characteristics when forming/bending. A metal's strength is directly related to its grain size; reducing grain size is a common way to improve material strength which often has little to no effect on the material's toughness.

Our main polishing applications are abrasive polishing and buffing, however subsequent cutouts and grain direction processes can be applied. Stainless steel is our most commonly used substrate however we are capable of polishing aluminum, copper, Inconel, titanium, and clad metals, and can be contacted for custom metal polishing projects.
Both the Aluminum Oxide Cutting Wheel and the Turkish Emery Set-up Wheel are then mounted onto the buffing lathe, rotated by hand and cracked with a mallet or rod to produce flexibility in the wheel. (The cracks should be approximately thumb size.) The Emery Wheel is greased throughout production to produce a better finish.

Looking at the bridge plate I see that the wood was mostly chipped out between the holes. Here's a view with the INSIGHT inspection camera. Notice how the wood is missing for at least half its thickness right at the holes. I do not understand why virtually all makers run the grain direction of bridge plates parallel to the length of the bridge.
